BYD has established its presence in the Indian market with two products: the E6 MPV and the Atto 3 SUV. The premier EV manufacturer is now set to launch its third product, the BYD Seal. Ahead of this launch, the company has filed design patents for two more products: one SUV and one hatchback. Part of its Ocean series, the BYD Dolphin is the first expected launch in the Indian market, followed by the compact electric hatchback, the BYD Seagull. With these models, BYD will cover all the hot segments of the Indian market.

First showcased at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the BYD Seagull is the smallest car in the company’s portfolio. This new model will sit below the Dolphin SUV and targets young customers. Labelled as the mini-Dolphin in international markets, the Seagull's exterior design features sharp lines and angular surfaces with slim overhangs at each end. Key highlights include a steeply raked front windscreen, a sloping bonnet, and a connected LED light bar at the rear. Inside, the new Seagull shares elements with other BYD models, such as a 5-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch infotainment screen, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Despite its compact dimensions, the new packaging allows the hatchback to offer more space compared to its rivals.

Designed for agility and manoeuvrability, the new Seagull is built on the third-generation EV platform which underpins other BYD models. The hatchback produces around 100 bhp and is expected to come with either a 30 kWh short-range battery pack with a range of 305 km or a larger 38 kWh unit boasting a range of 405 km.

While details about the hatchback are limited, the Seagull is expected to make its way to India, given that BYD has already included the E6, Atto 3, and Seal in its current lineup. The Seagull is priced at Rs 9.28 lakh (78,000 Yuan) in international markets. When launched in India, it is expected to be priced aggressively to rival the Tata Tiago EV and the MG Comet EV.
