New Mexico's intercity commuter rail system was bustling with trains, as the sun was setting in Bernalillo, on August 14, 2009. Bi-level commuter coaches with control-cab cars were pulled or pushed by streamlined MP36PH-3C passenger diesels. The New Mexico Rail Runner Express provided frequent rail service for commuters around Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Amtrak's storied Southwest Chief hustled by former Santa Fe Railway movable blade semaphore signals, installed during the 1920s, in northern New Mexico.
