The 1990s Marantz CD52mkII player has a known issue where the tray loading gear wears out over time. The result is a juttering eject/load or non operational CD tray. The same CDM-4 tray mechanism was used in a number of Marantz and Philips CD players at the time.
The repair is relatively simple and consists of replacing the gear cog due to broken/worn down cog teeth. The CMD4 transport gear cog/wheel and rubber belt are readily available from some UK sources as well as Amazon and eBay (~5GBP).
If you find that when inspecting the gear that there is no broken teeth but the machine stutters when you open then you are likely to need to replace the stretched rubber belt (83mm diameter, 1.2mm square belt) but, with shipping, tend to cost near the price of a cog/rubber belt package.

To open, CDP facing:
1x flat head or phillips screw driver, 1x T10 torx driver (small flathead would also work)
remove 4x phllips brass screws both left and right side
remove 1x brass torx from centre rear
slide lid back, up and off
remove 3x brass torx from top of panel front
remove 1x brass torx from bottom under headphone socket
slide CD tray out 6-8cm manually, pushing from rear of cogs
detach the clips either side L/R to release panel, angle at 45degree
slide CD tray open, angling down when reaching the end - hold the CD tray from underneath to avoid dropping the CD platter - no need to detach the front of CD tray
rest the front panel on the right side of CDP - no need to detach any ribbon cables
pop off the existing cog, front right of the CD laser mechanism - gently lever the vertical plastic seat to release the cog and rubber belt
replace cog/belt and reverse steps
Notes - I would add some grease to the 4 nubs (2 front and 2 back - the ones on the L are spring loaded) that the CD tray would slide onto as well as the rear white tab that indicates when the tray is closed.
