Avoid putting people on pedestals.
When you're new to polyamory, it's natural to view experienced polyam folks as "experts" or inherently safe people to date. To some extent, experience does matter—someone who's been polyamorous for years has likely faced common challenges and understands their boundaries better than someone brand new.
But time spent identifying as polyamorous isn't the same as wisdom gained. Just like in all aspects of life, age doesn't guarantee someone has learned much. Someone can gain profound relationship skills in six months, while another person learns virtually nothing over a decade.
Don't assume that someone active in the polyam community or with lots of experience will automatically be knowledgeable, ethical, or safe to date. Experience doesn't equal inner work. Community visibility doesn't equal trustworthiness.
Judge people by how they treat you and others, not by how long they've been polyamorous or how many partners they've had.
Have you ever put someone on a pedestal because of their experience? Let's talk in the comments. ⬇️
