This excerpt is from the second of two concerts presented in successive years by renowned dramatic tenor Thomas LoMonaco and accompanied by assistant conductor/coach of the Metropolitan Opera, Alberta Masiello for the New York University Opera Club.

ABOUT THE RECORDING:

After decades of failed attempts, both concerts have been restored and can now be enjoyed in their entirety for the first time since they were recorded. A Grammy Award® winning audio restoration specialist utilized Cedar® Cambridge NR-4 noise-reduction process in the restoration of these concerts. There were no additional EQ adjustments or manipulation of sound. Therefore, this representation is as close to the integrity of the original sound as possible. Tommy possessed a musical sensitivity that was truly unique and in my opinion, his flowing mellifluous quality is unmatched by any dramatic tenor. The beautiful color, rolling portamenti, effortless dynamic regulation, iconic rubati, and thrilling top notes are some of the most interesting and arresting qualities of his singing. At his best, Tommy was among the very best and we are fortunate to have this document of him.

Tommy’s reading of this Schumann song cycle is truly remarkable by any standard of measure. The way in which he shades color and flowingly regulates dynamics to paint the poetry is breathtaking. For grins, he performs “Die Rose, die Lilie” in an astonishing, single, eighteen-second breath. Tommy stated that with hindsight, he would have preferred “to slow the tempo and take additional breathes to more deeply explore the poetry,” but Masiello insisted that he perform it in the single breath after hearing him execute the feat in rehearsal. Tommy’s reading of the “Dichterliebe” as well as his treatment of “Der Erlkönig” and “Der Doppelgänger” from the 1953 concert display an artist of great refinement, musical introspection and vocal distinction. This was not your typical Italian dramatic tenor, but rather a complete artist. Enjoy!
