Berggren started singing in Thore Swanerud's orchestra and later sang with Thore Ehrling, Simon Brehm and Göte Wilhelmsson . She was a trained music director at the Academy of Music (1956) and was called "The singing singer".

She already made her recording debut in 1952 with the melody "Nera" and in 1958 had a minor success with "Vals Intim". The big breakthrough came in 1962 with " Sol och vår ", which won the Swedish Melodifestivalen. That song also became her biggest record hit (as best as 2nd on the trade magazine Show Business sales list in April 1962). "Sol och vår" was also performed by Lily Berglund in the Swedish selection, but it was Inger Berggren who got to represent Sweden in the ESC in Luxembourg, where the song ended up in joint seventh place. In the same year, Inger Berggren got a long runner on the Svensktoppen with "Elisabeth serenade", 33 weeks on the list and a first place. The following year, she got a new number one at Svensktoppen with the Melodifestival song "Twist till minuet", which she did not perform in the competition itself, however. Inger Berggren also participated in Melodifestivalen 1967 as a composer. "Vem frågar vinden", performed by Towa Carson , came fifth. Her own version achieved a fifth place at best at the Svensktoppen.

During the 1970s, Inger Berggren worked as a music teacher in Täby municipality but continued to make records. She also worked as conductor at the Stadsteatern in Stockholm. Inger Berggren was the mother of actor Gunilla Röör and Elisabeth Johansson.

Inger Berggren is buried in the memorial grove at Skogskyrkogården in Stockholm. She passed away in 2019.

Annotation:

The expression 'Sol och våra någon' (= 'sun and spring'-ing somebody) means tricking a person out of money by false promises of marriage.
