THE WHAT:
Fly-on-the-wall insights into a recent class from our current cycle of Movement Practice, with a focus on the theme Dance & Open-form. We run weekly Movement Practice sessions in Bern, Switzerland, covering a wide range of topics that address the broad landscape of movement. Classes are open & accessible to every body. You can learn more about the classes and view our current timetable & subjects of practice here:

Presented here is a snippet from our work on Open-form dance. In this practice, we explore a range of movement "scores" (specific contexts that frame the practice) designed to empower students to work both experimentally and expressively, while still being guided by clear direction and underlying information.
0:05 - Context A: Heel/ball touch (explanation)
2:06 - Context A (practice)
4:41 - Context B: Pendulum-pass (explanation)
6:42 - Context B (practice)
9:16 - Context C: 'Painting-legs' OKC impro 1 (explanation)
10:56 - Context C (practice)
Alongside more abstract, fully open-form scores - such as working with visualization, imagery, immediate sensation, and the qualities, anatomy, constitution, and mechanics of the body itself (for example elastic qualities, body segments, touch, and breathing) - we also develop movement literacy in the arms and legs, allowing them to express themselves in and through space.
In this particular class, we focused on the legs and their open kinetic-chain (OKC) potential to "paint" in space. This work serves as an introduction to a body of research aptly referred to as 'Painting Legs', from which closed kinetic-chain possibilities emerge, along with additional layers created through the integration of physical and textural qualities of movement.
