Where is this and what is it now?
I found this old photograph from 1999 and wondered where it had been taken, what was it of and what had happened to the area?
I followed the clues, identified where it was, what had happened and it is quite staggering!
Please stay to the end for all the detail , I hope you enjoy, please like and subscribe.
Brought to you by Eclectic Experience, change seen through images.
The London, England, skyline and built environment is constantly changing, so over the years I have taken many photographs to record anything that could be of interest and I am now actually using them to make YouTube videos.
However sometimes I take a look at a picture and I have absolutely no idea where it was taken from and that happened with this one!
Includes:
Under pavement cellars or coal stores.
Long gone hotel - Continental Hotel on Gillingham Street
Pub - The Elusive Camel on Gillingham Street, also know as the Brougham now called the Victoria Taps.
Comment on denser building behind pub
Blue plaque author - Joseph Conrad - 1857 to 1924, famous for works including Lord Jim and the Heart of Darkness.
Gillingham Street listed Terrace ,
A new row of modern houses created facing Gillingham Row.
Location old pub Tut'n'Shive, previously known as the Fountain.
The building site from the 1999 photo was for the Park Plaza Victoria hotel seen here from Vauxhall Bridge road
The site is very interesting as it a microcosm of the change seen going on all over London, with denser living accommodation and building use changing as demands on land change.
