Working solo on the off grid kitchen beside the log cabin this week took a lot of effort as I built upwards into the canopy of the forest. I'm starting to add more organic lines to the frame of the shelter and because there are no straight lines and my carpentry skills are amateurish, it's been challenging. It's 8 feet high to the eaves and the roof towers another 5 feet higher on the west side in order to allow smoke from the grill and earthen oven to easily escape without a fire risk. I've decided to use mostly charcoal to operate the grill, oven and rocket stove to reduce sparks as well, so I'll start making charcoal in an underground pit soon. Lifting the heavy beams into place took all of my strength as well as some creative rigging with ropes, pulleys and ramps. As you'll see in episode 3 next week, the frame is done so most of the heavy lifting is over and I can start adding bracing to strengthen the structure before moving back to the ground to work on the stone work in the kitchen.
I had originally planned to use timber framing techniques for this shelter, but I also had planned on keeping it smaller so I decided to make it more organic and less of a long term permanent shelter. I plan on using my experience gained on this project and then practice on a timber framed open wood shed before moving onto the workshop/guest cabin, where I'll be trying my hand at proper timber framing joinery and other traditional building methods. I have a lot of clay and sand on hand and I'm sourcing limestone so that I can make my own mortar for the stone barbeque and the foundation and heater for the new cabin later this summer.
