"Friends, we're in facilitated negotiations with the DHC but your donation is urgently needed to save our holiday programs"
Dear Friends, Supporters, and Stakeholders,
Thank you for your continued solidarity and overwhelming support as we navigate this challenging period with the Detroit Housing Commission (DHC). Your voice is what empowers us to continue fighting for the residents of the Villages at Parkside.
STATUS UPDATE: Fighting for Our Space and Our Voice
As you know, FOP has been facing an eviction attempt by the DHC due to our ongoing advocacy and organizing efforts on behalf of Parkside residents. This fight is about protecting FOP's independent role as an advocate and organizer for the community.
Our last official communication was our "Leasing Update" letter, which detailed the initial stages of this conflict. We are pleased to report that the situation is evolving:
• A Positive Step Forward: As of last week, we met with DHC to discuss ways to move forward. These critical conversations are being facilitated by Luke Schafer of Poverty Solutions at the University of Michigan. This is a major step toward finding a sustainable path forward that protects FOP's independent advocacy, and we are working to strengthen our strategic position to ensure any agreements are binding and resident-focused.
• Recent Press: We want to share the recent Outlier Media article that details the complexity of our work and the broader issues at Parkside. (Please click here to read the article, titled: Neighborhood nonprofit attempts to stall $180M project on Detroit’s eastside).
• A Crucial Note on the Article's Framing: While the title focuses on FOP's efforts to question the project—framing our action as an "attempt to stall"—our advocacy is fundamentally about ensuring resident priorities are met and binding commitments are in place before a large-scale project begins. We are advocates, not obstructors, and we are now engaged in constructive, facilitated discussions to move forward.
