Title:"The Lesson of the Two Monks" a powerful zen story for your life
Title: "The Lesson of the Two Monks"
Once in ancient Japan, there were two monks, Tanzan and Ekido, who were traveling on foot during a heavy rainstorm. As they journeyed, they came across a muddy and treacherous riverbank. At the edge of the river, they noticed a young woman in a beautiful kimono, stranded and unable to cross.
Without hesitation, Tanzan approached the young woman, lifted her in his arms, and carried her across the river, ensuring she reached the other side safely. Ekido, who was strictly adhering to the rules of monastic life, watched in silence but was troubled by what he perceived as a breach of their discipline.
Hours passed as the two monks continued their journey through the rain. Ekido's thoughts raced with judgment about his fellow monk's actions. Finally, he could no longer contain his frustration and blurted out, "How could you, Tanzan? Our monastic vows forbid us to touch women, and yet you carried that woman across the river!"
Tanzan turned to Ekido, smiled serenely, and replied, "Brother Ekido, I put that woman down on the other side of the river hours ago. Why are you still carrying her?"
In this simple yet profound Zen story, the lesson is clear:
Letting Go of Attachments: Tanzan's act of helping the young woman was a compassionate response to a situation at hand. He acted in the moment without attachment to rules and judgments. The story reminds us that holding onto judgments and resentments can be a heavier burden than any physical weight.
Mindfulness and Presence: Ekido's continued preoccupation with the incident highlights the importance of being present in the here and now. Our minds often dwell on the past or worry about the future, causing unnecessary suffering. To find peace, we must let go of what no longer serves us and stay fully engaged in the present moment.
Compassion and Empathy: Tanzan's compassionate act of helping the young woman emphasizes the value of empathy and selflessness. Sometimes, breaking societal or personal rules may be necessary to alleviate someone's suffering. Compassion should guide our actions more than rigid adherence to rules.
"The Lesson of the Two Monks" teaches us that the path to a peaceful and fulfilled life involves mindfulness, compassion, and letting go of unnecessary burdens. It encourages us to release judgments, resentments, and attachments, allowing us to live more fully in the present moment.
