Описание: I'm still processing the weekend I spent in Monaco for the 2026 Grand Prix Historique. I can't believe I was able to experience this firsthand, from trackside and with all my equipment to record the sounds and the action at their best. As a first video, I want to share with you this one recorded with my binaural microphone. For those who aren't familiar with this audio recording technique, it's a special way of replicating the feeling of 'being there' simply by listening to the audio with your headphones (find more details on 'how it works' further down in the description). Generally it's applied to record relaxing nature sounds but, being obsessed with engines, I wanted to apply this method to my passion.

The event, now in its 15th edition, generally takes place every two years, gathering the cars that have made the history of the track from the 1930s to 1986 (currently). The cars, divided into age groups, take to the track three times during the weekend: a free practice session on Friday, qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday. In 2026 there was the official admission for turbo F1 cars produced up to 1986 (which saw a total of 5 cars entered). Another exclusive of the 2026 edition was the parade organized by Ferrari F1 Clienti with some of their old V10 and V8 Formula 1 cars.

Given the unique opportunity I had, you can understand that my focus of the weekend was to be able to record all these cars inside the famous Monaco tunnel and especially with my binaural microphone. I'd say I can check this side-quest off! I can't show you all the corners and turns of the track with this video, as I've mainly covered the area from Turn 4 to the tunnel, and then from the Tabac to the Piscine section. The general video with classic stereo audio will cover more points, thanks to the help of my friend Italiansupercarvideo.

Please remember no one is forcing you to watch it for its entire length, especially when it comes to these binaural vids, which are all primarly for background listening.

-- What the hell is a Binaural recording? --
Binaural recordings are reproductions of sound the way human ears hear it. Traditionally, recordings have been made using mono or stereo. Mono uses a single microphone while stereo uses two, spaced apart from each other. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones approximately at the same average distance that exists between one and the other human ear. But that's not enough as to recreate the best effect microphones must have an 'obstacle' in their way which corresponds to our head. The physical influence from the head is the so-called Head-Related Transfer Function (or HRTF for short). This transfer function expresses how the head and ears affects the transmission of an acoustical signal from a sound source to the eardrums.
If a car passes on your left side the sound will take a few extra microseconds to reach the right ear and it will also be louder in one ear (left) than the other. This is caused by the fact we have a thick skull and spongy brain between the two ears, so sound waves interact with the physical constitution of the listener and the surrounding space. HRTF is closely related to the individual shape of the human head, thus binaural recordings sound the best if recorded using your personal HRTF. However, in general, everybody experiences a much higher envelopment of the surrounding sound/3D effect if the recording has been done with a binaural microphone, even though the HRTF is not their own.
