Genesis 29 follows Jacob as he arrives in Paddan Aram and meets Rachel at a well, where he helps water her flock. He learns she is Laban’s daughter and is warmly welcomed into the family. Jacob falls in love with Rachel and agrees to work seven years for her hand in marriage. However, on the wedding night, Laban deceives him by giving him Leah, the older sister, instead. When Jacob discovers the trick, he confronts Laban, who justifies the act by citing local custom. Jacob then agrees to work another seven years for Rachel, and the chapter ends with Leah bearing several sons while Rachel remains childless.
