Film composer Christophe Beck shares how to stay on top of iconic movie scores of the past and present. He explains that during a film’s production, the editor may provide you with scenes that include “temp scores,” which serve as placeholders until the original score is written. In his career, Beck says that repeat temp scores often include “American Beauty” by Thomas Newman, “The Bourne Identity” by John Powell, and plenty of Hans Zimmer scores. He recommends becoming familiar with these composers, and also watching the biggest movies of the year and listening with a critical ear. He also suggests tuning into the Academy Awards to learn who the industry’s biggest players are. Staying current with these methods will help inform your vocabulary as a composer and will help you better communicate with a filmmaker.

Christophe Beck is an Emmy Award-winning composer whose credits include “Frozen” and “Frozen II,” “The Hangover” trilogy, Marvel’s “Ant-Man” films, “WandaVision” from Disney+, and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Beck attended the University of Southern California’s prestigious film scoring program, where he studied with legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith.
