Welcome to the Kohaihai River located at the start of the Heaphy Track. The large felled tree stumps along the foreshore at the DOC campsite are being sculptured into unique artworks. Fully protected in our anti-Sandfly gear - the essential merino gloves, long pants & sleeves, hats with mesh head nets, we investigate the short Nikau walk. The forest is dark, moody and primordial, with many large Nikau palms recently levelled by a strong cyclone. Watch the glorious sun set over the Kohaihai beach headland rocks, where the brown river waters race to join the brutal force of the Tasman Sea. A magic place!
