Floyd Tillman (December 8, 1914 – August 22, 2003) was a pioneering American country musician and songwriter who was instrumental in the development of the Western swing and honky-tonk genres. Known for his distinctive "jazz-inflected" vocal style and innovative use of the electric guitar, he was famously dubbed the "original outlaw" by his protégé, Willie Nelson.
Musical Style and Influence
Tillman was celebrated for a unique, relaxed singing style that often involved "bending notes" and singing behind or ahead of the beat, a technique inspired by jazz performers. This approach fundamentally influenced later artists like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and even early rock-and-roll pioneers such as Buddy Holly.
Key Songwriting and Hits
Tillman's legacy as a songwriter is vast, with over 1,000 songs to his credit. Some of his most enduring works include:
"It Makes No Difference Now" (1938): His first major hit, eventually recorded by Bing Crosby, Ray Charles, and the Supremes.
"They Took the Stars Out of Heaven" (1944): His only No. 1 hit as a performer.
"Each Night at Nine" (1944): A wartime anthem that resonated deeply with soldiers separated from their families during World War II.
"I Love You So Much It Hurts" (1948): A multi-genre standard covered by countless artists, including Andy Williams and Vic Damone.
"Slippin' Around" (1949): Widely recognized as one of country music's first and most famous "cheating" songs, tackling the then-taboo subject of infidelity.
Accolades and Hall of Fame Inductions
His contributions to American roots music earned him several high honors:
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame: Inducted in 1970.
Country Music Hall of Fame: Inducted in 1984 by Willie Nelson.
Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame: Inducted in 1990.
Final Years
Tillman largely retired from the road in the early 1950s but remained active in the studio. Shortly before his death from leukemia in 2003, he recorded a final collaborative album titled The Influence (released posthumously in 2004), which featured duets with many of the legends he inspired, including Dolly Parton, George Jones, and Ray Price.
