In 1940s America, a doctor named Walter Freeman believed he could cure mental illness by hammering an ice pick through your eye socket and into your brain.
He performed over 3,400 of these “transorbital lobotomies” in his career — sometimes 25 in a single day, sometimes on stage in front of crowds, sometimes on children as young as four years old. He didn’t use anaesthetic. He used an ice pick from his own kitchen drawer for the first one. He called the procedure a 10-minute miracle and travelled across the United States in a personal van he nicknamed the “lobotomobile,” performing operations at hospitals, asylums, and even small-town fairgrounds.
His most famous patient was Rosemary Kennedy JFK’s 23-year-old sister. Her father authorised the lobotomy without telling her mother. The procedure left Rosemary unable to walk, speak coherently, or care for herself. She spent the next 64 years of her life in an institution. The Kennedy family hid her existence from the public for decades.
Freeman lost his medical licence in 1967 — not because the lobotomy was banned, but because a patient died on his table. He had killed and disabled thousands of people. He was never charged with a crime.
