Rondale Moore, a beloved professional football player and son to an inspiring single mother, has died. He was 25.
The Vikings receiver was discovered in his hometown of New Albany, Indiana, with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"We are all heartbroken by the fact he won't continue to live out his NFL dream,” Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connel said. “And we won't all have a chance to watch him flourish.”
Moore was born a fighter, arriving five weeks early on June 9, 2000 and spend five weeks in the ICU with underdeveloped longs.
Quincy Ricketts raised Rondale and his three older siblings on a $20,000 salary, and her son later repaid her by buying her home with his football earnings.
Moore first showed his incredible burst at Louisville’s Trinity High School, where he developed into a four-star recruit.
In three seasons at Purdue, he tallied nearly 2,200 yards and 17 touchdowns.
"Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone,” his Purdue coach, Jeff Brohm, said. “We loved his smile and competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with.”
The Cardinals drafted Moore in the second round in 2021, and he tallied nearly 1,500 yards and four scores in three seasons.
He was traded to the Falcons, but suffered a dislocated knee and missed the season.
Then, after a year of recovery, he joined the Vikings, only to suffer a second season-ending injury in their preseason opener.
“As a player, he was disciplined, dedicated and resilient despite facing adversity multiple times as injuries sidelined him throughout his career,” O’Connell said. “He was a humble, soft-spoken, and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots.”
