Guitarist Denis Sorokin recently wrote that the experience of Taku Sugimoto’s music mirrors Japanese culture’s focus on the contemplation of transience, or rapidly flowing reality. “The music seems to be moving nowhere,” he wrote, but “the sounds in their own way seem to mark the passage of time, arranging the flags so that we don’t get lost in the flow of life around us.” For this graphic piece, Sugimoto’s instructions are succinct: “People move and pause while making sounds. That’s all.” The one-page score presents an abstract landscape that mixes images of trees, branches, and mossy hills with geometric shapes of various sizes, colors, and weights. Among those images and shapes, a profusion of straight and curving lines offer performers many possibilities for direct or meandering play.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Extradition is an ensemble and concert series that works at the intersection of composition and improvisation, deliberation and chance, clarity and silence.
