The Bosworth battlefield walk is a 6 mile loop that starts and ends at Sutton Wharf in Leicestershire. There are both car parking and boat mooring facilities here along with toilets and a cafe.
The walk takes in Bosworth heritage centre and Amble hill, the location which was once thought to have been the place the Battle of Bosworth was fought. It also heads through the very pretty Amble woods and the villages of Shenton and Stoke Golding. It is an easy trail, but one steeped in history and we had a wonderful time finding out about the battle of Bosworth.
It was the last great battle of the war of the roses, fought between the two houses of York and Lancaster.
In this final battle, Henry Tudor and his smaller band of rebels took on King Richard lll to steal his crown and begin the Tudor Dynasty. Henry’s victory was aided by Lord Stanley and his army, who was supposed to fight alongside the king, but changed sides in the final moments and attacked King Richard.
According to legend, King Richard lost his horse in the marshes mid-battle, which spurred the famous line: ‘A horse, my kingdom for a horse!’ In Shakespeare’s play King Richard lll.
Over the course of this year I have completed 5 long distance hiking trails: The Cleveland Way, the Cumbria way, the great glen way, the Snowdonia mountain route and the Brontë way. You can find videos for all of these routes on my YouTube channel - Drunk On Wanderlust
Don’t forget to drop me a comment, I love hearing from you all! Have you been out hiking in the UK or abroad recently? Do you enjoy wild camping UK? Have you come across any great wild camping locations or hiking trails you could recommend? Let me know!
I’m also always interested in finding new day hikes, and long distance footpaths I can try out when I am limited for time.
