Rail Baltica is a major infrastructure project aimed at integrating the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—into the European rail network. It is a high-speed rail line under construction, designed to connect the Baltic region with Poland and the rest of Europe.
Key Features of Rail Baltica:
Standard Gauge: Unlike the existing Russian gauge tracks in the Baltics, Rail Baltica will use the European standard gauge (1,435 mm) to ensure seamless travel with Western Europe.
Speed: Passenger trains will travel up to 249 km/h (155 mph), while freight trains will have a max speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).
Length: The main line will be 870 km (540 mi), running from Tallinn (Estonia) to Warsaw (Poland) via Riga (Latvia) and Kaunas/Vilnius (Lithuania).
Environmental Focus: Designed to be a green and sustainable railway, reducing road transport emissions.
Current Status & Timeline:
The expected completion date has shifted over the years, but the aim is for full operation by 2030.
It is co-financed by the European Union, with significant funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
Why It Matters:
Reduces Dependence on Russia: Strengthens the Baltic states' connection to Western Europe.
Boosts Economy & Trade: Provides a modern rail link for passengers and freight.
Improves Military Mobility: Enhances NATO’s logistics and security infrastructure in the region.
