How To Build An Obelisk

I was recently wanting to add a classic cottage garden obelisk. But, after looking online I noticed how expensive they were. They also looked exactly the same. After several different attempts at designing something unique, I finally had the perfect design. Something that looks like a garden obelisk, but was also sleek and modern.

This step-by-step video guide will show you how to build a one-of-a-kind modern-style garden obelisk in just a few simple steps.

Why add an obelisk to your garden? They are a great way to add height, structure and a statement piece to your garden. The perfect spot to grow a climbing rose, clematis, jasmine, honeysuckle or any climbing vegetable. Gardeners have been using these since the 1700's.

Tools needed:
Saw of any kind.
Measuring tape.
Straight edge.
1.5" screws (Slightly smaller or larger will still work).

Tools not needed, but ideal:
Wood glue.
Miter saw or table saw.
Clamp.

Materials:
4 - 6ft or 8ft 2" by 2" boards. I used Doug Fir because it is cheaper, but you could also use redwood. Remember, it will be labeled as 2" by 2" but it is actually 1.5" by 1.5". I purchased two .5" by 1.5" which will be labeled as 1 x 2. If you make careful cuts you actually only need one. The total cost was $3.82 x 4 = $15.28, $1.89 x 1 = $1.89, for a total of $17.17 + tax.

This obelisk is 28" at the base and 5ft high. The first two legs have cross braces that measure (on center) 7.5", 22.5" & 37.5". Connect the other two legs at the top. The final three cross braces measure (on center) 15", 30" & 45".

Remember if you have a speed square you can make a larger or smaller obelisk, by simply increasing the degree of the cut at the top and the length of the cross braces.
