Atmospheres III drifts in on four anchoring bass notes—an elemental motif with a lineage that might trace back through Liszt and into Wagner’s Parsifal. The piece opens in a slow, weighty haze, textures thick and suspended. Midway, it briefly breaks formation: a spontaneous riff surfaces, and a soft organ line threads through it in real time, adding a moment of motion before dissolving again into the surrounding mist. The music settles back into its atmospheric world just as quickly, leaving the impression of something glimpsed, not fully grasped, before sinking beneath the surface once more.
