Why do narcissists get so angry when they're confronted on their behavior? Before I answer that, it's important to understand that at the core of a narcissist is shame and low self-esteem.
When they're confronted on their behavior, it causes a narcissistic injury - they can't accept that they've done something wrong. Instead, they use anger as a way to deflect attention away from what they've done and onto something else. This is a manipulation tactic known as DARVO - Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offend.
It's important to remember that this is not your fault. If you've ever been DARVO'd, it's important to know that this is a reflection of the narcissist's own issues and not a reflection of your worth or value as a person.
Narcissists struggle with acknowledging their own humanity and the needs of others. They create a false self, an ego persona, as a mask to hide their shame and low self-esteem. But this false self can be incredibly damaging to those around them, as they use manipulation tactics like DARVO to avoid taking responsibility for their behavior.
If you're in a relationship with a narcissist, it's important to take care of yourself and set boundaries to protect your mental and emotional health. Remember that you deserve to be in a relationship where you are treated with respect and kindness, and where your needs are valued and respected.
And if you've ever been DARVO'd by a narcissist, know that you're not alone. This is a common tactic that narcissists use to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. It's important to recognize it for what it is and to protect yourself from further harm.
