Through a portrait of the life of Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, an Indian classical vocalist and poet who wrote in Awadhi and Braj bhasha, the film explores the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb (a syncretic Hindu Muslim culture) of India, the student teacher relationship and the encounter of this tradition with modernity. In today’s polarized India, the very existence of someone like him and his music is an act of rebellion. The film Rasan Piya is an attempt to document, preserve and remember this beautiful, composite cultural heritage.
