Early Life and Education:
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to actors David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe. His father abandoned the family when Edgar was very young, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was just three years old. He was taken in by John and Frances Allan, wealthy merchants from Richmond, Virginia. While Edgar never formally adopted their surname, he did take on the middle name Allan.

Poe received a classical education at boarding schools in England and Virginia, where he excelled academically. However, after a falling out with John Allan, he left the University of Virginia after just one year and enlisted in the United States Army under the name "Edgar A. Perry." He served for two years before being discharged in 1829.

Career:
In 1827, Poe published his first collection of poetry, "Tamerlane and Other Poems." It received little attention, and he continued to struggle financially. In 1831, he moved to Baltimore to live with his aunt, Maria Clemm, and her daughter, Virginia, whom he later married.

In Baltimore, Poe worked as an editor and critic for several literary magazines, including the Southern Literary Messenger. He gained notoriety for his critical reviews of other writers' works, often using scathing language to condemn their efforts.

Poe's own writing career gained momentum in the mid-1830s, with the publication of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym" in 1838, and his famous poem "The Raven" in 1845. "The Raven" made Poe a household name and brought him national fame, but it also brought him little financial gain.

Personal Life:
Poe's personal life was marked by tragedy and misfortune. His wife Virginia suffered from tuberculosis, and he struggled to care for her as her health declined. She died in 1847, and Poe was devastated. He fell into a deep depression and turned to alcohol to cope with his grief.

Death:
On October 3, 1849, Poe was found delirious and incoherent on the streets of Baltimore. He was taken to Washington College Hospital, where he died four days later. The cause of his death is unknown, although alcoholism and various illnesses have been suggested as possible contributing factors.

Legacy:
Poe's literary legacy is significant and enduring. He is considered the father of the modern detective story, with his famous character C. Auguste Dupin inspiring later writers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. His works have also influenced the development of horror and science fiction literature.

Poe's personal life and mysterious death have added to his enduring fame, and his works continue to be widely read and studied today. Some of his most famous works include "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Cask of Amontillado."
