Nearly 2,000 firefly species are living worldwide in a variety of warm and temperate environments.
In high vegetation lands such as the western ghats they are mostly thriving in low forests near water bodies. Fireflies are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions, and can only thrive in healthy habitats where water quality is good. This makes the insect an environmental indicator and one can assess the health of the surrounding ecosystem.
Fireflies have light organs that are located under their abdomen. Their task is to mix two unique chemicals - luciferin and luciferase. When this reaction happens in the presence of oxygen it results in an ambient glow or ‘bioluminescence’.
A male firefly uses a specific pattern to locate compatible females of the same species.
Flashing signals from the light organ the male succeeds in getting an approval by a female who returns a similar flash as her announcement.
Mated females will deposit about one hundred spherical eggs near the soil surface. During monsoon the firefly larvae will live in the soil and feed on other insects. After spending almost a year underground they will emerge once again just before the monsoon season performing an unusual synchronized light pattern which appears to be the ‘Dance of the fireflies’.
