A group of female free divers known for fishing in the frigid ocean waters off South Korea’s Jeju Island — and the adaptations that make their dives possible — have been the subject of research lately.
When researchers asked the Haenyeos to dunk their faces in cold water, their heart rates dropped more than non-divers due to a lifetime of training. When it comes to genetics, though, everyone on the island — Haenyeos and non-Haenyeos alike — basically had the same genes, including two that stood out: one related to cold tolerance and another related to blood pressure, which may offer protection from preeclampsia and other conditions like stroke.
Melissa Ilardo, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Utah, says the Haenyeos’ extreme diving has changed not just their bodies, but those of everyone else on this island who are descended from divers.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing,” Ilardo posed to NPR, “if we can translate these findings to develop a therapeutic that protects people from stroke around the world?”
