Meniscus tear is one of the commoner cause of knee pain across all age groups. Meniscus tear can occur after injury, can happen with arthritis of knee.
Meniscus tear can be isolated or associated with ligament injuries after sports injuries. Degenerative tears occurring with osteoarthritis of knee are usually isolated.
The treatment depends on the type of tear, associated injuries, and patients clinical symptoms. 95% of times, they need just medicines and physio rehabilitation. Acute injuries need rest, ice application, compression and elevation.
Those with associated injuries usually need surgery. Degenerative tears with arthritis don't need surgery.
In young population surgeons try to preserve the major portion of meniscus either by repair or partial excision. Surgery is done by arthroscopy and needs only small stab incisions.
