(22 Apr 2014) The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited a cultural centre at Ayers Rock, the red monolith in the Australian desert now known by its Aboriginal name Uluru on Tuesday, where they watched a traditional Aboriginal welcome ceremony.
Prince William and his wife, Kate, also met traditional Anangu owners of the land and local artists at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, as part of their tour of Australia's iconic red centre.
In the shadow of Uluru, the British royals watched a 'Welcome to Country' ceremony featuring ochre-painted dancers, clapping sticks, and chanting of generations-old stories.
William was presented with a carved wooden shield, and Kate was given a traditional necklace.
The royal couple met Anangu members and watched artists painting and carving.
Several Anangu women embraced Kate as the royals prepared to leave the cultural centre.
The Anangu people are the traditional owners of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, formerly known as Ayers Rock and The Olgas.
William and Kate will visit Uluru later on Tuesday.
