Today we went up the same mountain as the bunker but the different end unfortunately the weather was not on our side as the fog just got thicker so no beautiful views today, but having all this amazing history on my door step is great.
During the dark days of the war fires were deliberately started by members of the Home Guard. The mountains near Minera may look serene today.
But during World War II fires were often lit there to lure German bombers away from strategic targets.
Flames would leap into the air from pans set alight across the grasslands, as the Luftwaffe headed for Liverpool and dockland sites, in a bid to dupe the enemy into thinking they had reached their targets.
The Home Guard would make their way to the uninhabited mountain sides to light fires and draw the planes away from heavily populated areas and sites important to the war effort.
It has also been suggested the pans near Minera, part of the Esclusham Mountain Range, were also lit as a decoy for the nearby Brymbo Steelworks which became a vitally important utility to supply quality steel to the air ministry.
