STORYLINE
Security remained tight in Yemen's capital on Thursday as Muslims celebrated the end of the fasting month of Ramadan by attending the Eid al-Fitr prayers.
Despite the holiday's peaceful message, the country remained on heightened alert, a day after the government announced it had foiled an al-Qaida plot to to take over key cities in the south and attack strategic ports and gas facilities.
Military and intelligence officials on Wednesday said they had uncovered an al-Qaida plot to attack naval forces guarding international shipping in the Red Sea.
The militants from the group's Yemeni branch - known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula - also were said to be plotting to use long-range missiles to target embassies and diplomats' residences, or try to take foreigners as hostages, the officials said.
The US and Britain had already evacuated their embassies amid the increasing tension.
Yemen's defence interior minister on Thursday said the government had implemented "many security plans" to protect both its citizens and the many foreigners living in the country.
Multiple checkpoints have been set up across Sanaa and tanks and other military vehicles are guarding vital institutions.
