The TT-30, later TT-33 (7,62 mm Samozarjadnyj Pistolet Tokareva obrazca 1933 goda), is developed as a service pistol for the Soviet Army and to replace the Nagant M1895 revolver, in use since the time of the Russian Empire.
In 1930, the Revolutionary Military Council approved a resolution to test new small arms to replace its aging Nagant M1895 revolvers. During these tests, on 7 January 1931, the potential of a pistol designed by Fedor Tokarev was noted, based in Colt 1911 and FN 1903. A few weeks later, 1,000 TT-30s were ordered for troop trials, and the pistol was adopted for service in the Red Army. The TT-30 was manufactured between 1930 and 1936, with about 93,000 being produced.
Even as the TT-30 was being put into production, design changes were made to simplify manufacturing. Minor changes to the barrel, disconnector, trigger and frame were implemented, the most notable ones being the omission of the removable hammer assembly and changes to the full-circumference locking lugs. This redesigned pistol was the TT-33. Most TT-33s were issued to commanding officers. The TT-33 was widely used by Soviet troops during World War II, but did not completely replace the Nagant. From 1931-1945, a total of 1,330,000 Tokarevs were produced in the Soviet Union. It was replaced by Makarov (Pistolet Makarova) in 1951.
TT-33 was made in original 9 mm Parabellum, .38 Super Auto and 9x23 mm Winchester. A caliber .22 training version called the Model R-3 and a caliber .22 target version called Model R-4 have also been manufactured.
The Soviet 7,62 model 1930 Type P cartridge is almost identical to the 7,63 mm Mauser cartridge and is interchargeable with that cartridge.
TT-33 has been manufactured in Hungary as the Model 48 and in Communist China as Type 51 (Shiki 51).
Tokarev TT-33 7,62 mm were used by brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi in Charlie Hebdo's shooting in Paris, France, on 7th january 2015, and used too two days later by Amedy Coulibaly that assaults the kosher supermarket Hyper Cacher in Paris, dated back to 1951 and 1952 also turned into blank-firing weapons by Kol Arms in 2014, before being re-activated by a third party.
The German Army captured a good number of Tokarev pistols during World War II and supplied them to their units under the designation of Pistole 615 (r).
Around 1,7 millions were made.
Designed by Fiódor Vassilievitch Tokarev (1871-1968), also deputy in Duma between 1941-1950.
