I used Tinder to find my research sample, but it didn’t start that way.
While living in Bilbao and using Tinder to meet local people, I began having conversations that unexpectedly reshaped my dissertation. The people I met were skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable, yet blocked from opportunities because they lacked formal credentials.
This video reflects on how everyday encounters reveal the limits of credentialism, the gap between education policy and lived experience, and who gets to count as an expert. Drawing on my research on the recognition and validation of non-formal learning, I explore how knowledge often lives outside universities, in relationships, conversations, and everyday life.
This video was created as a “Food for Thought” contribution to the Co-Creating Social Worlds Symposium (Taos Institute) and is meant as an invitation to conversation rather than a conclusion.
