Ok folks, here we go again with another big East Riding village, and this one’s got it all. Welcome to Brandesburton, situated approximately 7 miles west of Hornsea and 9 miles northeast of Beverley, alongside the A165. The A165 used to pass through the village until the opening of a new bypass in 1994, which runs around the edge of the village and neighbouring Leven. You’ll recall we discussed that road in the Leven episode.

Brandesburton’s name is an Anglian and Scandinavian hybrid and it means “fortified farmstead belonging to Brandr”. The parish is formed by the main village of Brandesburton, but also by the hamlets of Burshill and Hempholme, both located away to the West. The greater part of the former RAF Catfoss also falls within the parish too.

Industrially, Brandesburton was important for sand quarries and gravel pits. Around the village are several former workings, which have all been transformed now into different things including Humberside Shooting Ground, Billabong Watersports, Dacre Lakeside Park and Fosse Hill Jet Ski Centre. These make Brandesburton a popular tourist destination as does its golf club too, which occupies the former parkland of Brandesburton Hall.

Landmarks here include a market cross, a church, two pubs, a school and several fabulous old buildings, some of which harbour some hidden bits of history. Let’s go!
