Flamethrowers were once one of the most feared weapons on the battlefield—used in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. But today, you don’t see them in Ukraine or Gaza. Why?

In this video, I break down how flamethrowers actually work (spoiler: it’s basically a very angry Super Soaker), why they were terrifying, and why most modern armies ditched them. From their short range and heavy weight, to the fact that drones and thermobaric rockets now do the job better, flamethrowers just don’t fit modern warfare.

But there’s one outlier: China still fields the Type-74 flamethrower. Why? Is it for real military use, or just for show?

We’ll also look at why drones dropping molten metal didn’t catch on in Ukraine, and why Israel avoids using fire in Gaza’s tunnel complexes.
