See the RC time constant (τ = R × C) in action! Using a 1µF capacitor, 1kΩ resistor, and 1V DC source, this simple setup shows how a capacitor charges and discharges over time.
Capacitance (C) = 1 µF = 1 × 10⁻⁶ F, Resistance (R) = 1 kΩ = 1000 Ω
Supply Voltage (V) = 1 V DC
📐 Time Constant Calculation:
𝜏=𝑅×𝐶=1000Ω×1×10−6𝐹=0.001𝑠=1𝑚𝑠
τ=R×C=1000Ω×1×10−6
F=0.001s=1ms
So the RC time constant is 1 millisecond.
t = 5τ (5 ms): ~99.3% of 1 V → almost fully charged
t = 5τ (5 ms): nearly 0 V → almost fully discharged
With R = 1kΩ and C = 1µF, the RC time constant is just 1 millisecond – watch the capacitor reach ~63% charge in that time!
