About 50 meters away lies a megalithic tomb from the Neolithic period. During this time, humans gradually began to settle down and engage in livestock farming.
The megalithic tombs were built from 3,500 BC onwards in the Funnel Beaker culture. On Rügen, the most typical construction type for megalithic tombs is a large dolmen. A large dolmen consists of a burial chamber and a barrow. In this case, the burial chamber consisted of three bays. A bay consists of two supporting stones and a
capstone lying on top, which are built like a gate. The burial chamber is enclosed by stones. This forms the barrow, which can be square, round, or oval
In the Funnel Beaker culture, typical grave goods included ceramic shards and stone artifacts such as axes, arrowheads, hatchets, scrapers, and scrapers. Amber beads were also included as a special feature. There were repeated burials in the graves, and the existing resting places were also used from the Bronze Age up to the Slavic period.
The megalithic tomb at the Waldhalle is approximately 5,000 years old. No excavations have taken place. The burial chamber of the large dolmen is in good condition, which is rather rare.
Three-quarters of the megalithic tombs have been destroyed in the last 200 years. The stones were mostly used as building material by the so-calledstone breakers."
the historical heritage should not be lost in the national park and should be accessible to visitors
A visit to the megalithic tomb takes you off the marked hiking trails and into the heart of the national park. To protect the forest in its pristine state, no traffic safety measures are being implemented in this area.
