Robocop vs Terminator – #megadrive Drive vs #snes A Side by Side Review
#robocop vs #terminator is one of those rare early 90s titles where for me the two versions of the same game didn’t feel that dramatically different. Each tailored to show off what its host machine could really do. Both deliver that unmistakable “arcade at home” punch, but in very different ways.
Graphics
Mega Drive (Genesis)
• The Mega Drive version pushes a grittier, darker aesthetic. Its colour palette, though limited, is used cleverly to create a comic book, grimy atmosphere that feels very true to both franchises.
• Sprites are larger and animations have a weightier, more brutal feel. Enemy explosions and gore effects are far more pronounced, giving this version a more mature tone.
• Backgrounds feature sharp, high contrast detail typical of the Mega Drive’s strengths.
SNES
• The SNES version leans into cleaner, more colourful visuals. While less violent, it benefits from smoother gradients, richer backgrounds, and more vibrant environments.
• Mode 7 and parallax effects appear in places, showcasing the SNES’s flair for layered visuals.
• Character animations are slightly smoother, although sprites are generally smaller and less imposing than on the Mega Drive.
Sound & Music
Mega Drive
• The Mega Drive’s FM based audio delivers crunchy, aggressive tracks with a more industrial feel.
• Explosions and gunfire sound harsher and punchier.
• Music is fast and metallic, fitting Robocop and the Terminators perfectly.
SNES
• The SNES version shines with its warm, layered samples.
• Music is richer and more orchestral, offering atmosphere rather than intensity.
• Sound effects are softer but more detailed due to the SNES sound chip’s superior sampling capability.
Arcade Feel
Both versions manage to feel like you’ve just stepped up to a cabinet at your local arcade, but in different ways.
• The Mega Drive nails the arcade attitude, harsh, fast, aggressive and violent.
• The SNES nails the arcade presentation, smoother animations, richer soundscapes.
Neither feels like a downgrade or lazy port; both feel purpose built to show what each console could do.
Sales Performance
While hard numbers vary by region and source, general market history indicates:
• Mega Drive version sold notably well, particularly in North America and the UK, where the Mega Drive had a strong action game audience. Its reputation for being the “more violent” and “arcade like” version boosted sales.
• SNES version sold modestly, performing decently but not matching the Mega Drive’s uptake. The toned down violence and different presentation made it less of a must have for the core audience, though it remained popular among SNES fans who preferred smoother visuals and sound.
Neither was a blockbuster on the level of flagship Sonic or Mario titles, but both versions achieved solid commercial success and cult status among retro collectors today.
The Mega Drive version delivers raw comic book grit; SNES offers polish and colour depth. Both machines play to their strengths impressively and even as a Sega fan boy, the Nintendo version just felt a little bit better to play and it’s certainly harder with the inability to reduce the game mode (Not that you’d want to). Added to that though. Robocop looked better on the Mega Drive than the steroid fuelled SNES version.
Let’s start the debate, which version was better ?
