The idea behind the Medieval Banquet series came about after the Roman Holiday videos were a big success (Sept-Nov 2019). I thought that the natural follow up would be the story of what happened in Europe next, during the times after the Romans left.

In June 2021, I had been filling out my family tree on Ancestry.com, with a lot of help from Geni. Although King Arthur wasn't anywhere near my tree, I managed to plot the descendants of Odin back to the Kings of Northumberland, and there I found a back door into Arthur. This sparked an interest in this period of history, and I watched all the related videos on youtube, ranging from Arthur to Agincourt, from Henry II to Joan of Arc. I made a video about my family tree on my School of Philosophy channel, for anyone who might be interested.

26th July 2021 I recorded Castles 1.1 - the stand alone expansion to the original game, which boasted a new new extra features, and a brand new story line about The Picts. How could I resist! The game was fun and there was a real sense of being the Lord of the Realm, with the right to rule over the small task of building a castle. King Henry II was a new favourite of mine, having read the manual for Castles from cover to cover. In August 2021, I played Castles 2, and made sure to make regular saves, so that I could load those up and make a review about my progress. In September 2021, you might remember I was playing Lords of the Realm; and broadcast a special Live Stream of my progress during this time.

It was clear by October 5th that what I had here was something which needed not only a series, but also an introduction video, where I narrate the history of the story behind the games. I wrote down all the medieval strategy games I found on Lemon, along with the supposed dates they were set in, onto a single side of A4 as a Memory Map for the series (see attached). From this list, I choose the games I needed to cover, and put those into a timeline in the video editor, with blank sections to fill in for the games I had yet to record from the list.

By the 10th October, I had started working on idea for the introduction. The wood panelling came of course from Supercars 2. I snapshoted 3 different images of the game titles, and used them to copy and paste the wood over the top of the text, until I had compiled the whole background of the image. The Coat of Arms shown at the bottom right corner of the King information screens was adapted from the one found in Lords of the Realm. The birds and colour design of the coat of arms are from the Waddington family crest/coat of arms, or at least as good as I could manage. The font used for the Medieval Banquet title credit is an Amiga colour font, which I snapshoted from DPaint.

Getting to grips with all of those Kings lead to me writing a 'quick' lookup table of dates and bullet points, just so I could place specific events in history. This list was made with Notepad, and the idea eventually turned into a 28 page list of bullet points, which I then pasted into Word, and highlighted the various British and Invading factions with different colours. (see Research Notes Link at the top of this page).

14th Feb 22 - I narrated everything. This was made easier because I still had all my teeth at that point. Created the chapter points with the King images and the info, along with name captions for each game.

The next step was to create the soundtrack; and I was very lucky to find 6 different medieval sounding Mods which fit in perfectly. I also threw in the theme from Powermonger, in case anyone is wondering where that came from. The intro animation came from Castles 2 on the CD32. The ending animation came from Kaiser, which is not featured with any game footage, I just liked the ending. The audio balance seems a bit quiet on my system, but at full volume on youtube it seems normal.

Bugs:
During the Defender of the Crown segment, I made at least 3 mistakes. Ivanhoe is just called 'Ivanhoe', not 'Wilfred of Ivanhoe'. I say the book was released in 1899, but in fact it was released in 1819. Ashby-de-la-zouch is in Leicestershire, but I say the tournament is in Appleby; which is in Yorkshire. Those bugs are all fixed in the DOTC review video.
Joan of Arc did not behead people.
