In-depth comparison of all delay effect models in Line6 Pod HD 500, set both pre and post amp to hear the difference between the two stages and look for potentially useful tonal artifacts. No talking, playing only. This clip was entirely played with on a Squier Stratocaster, on bridge humbucker. Recorded direct via USB. No other effects, no post processing. Additional details and timestamps below.

Signal: Input 1 Guitar, Input 2 Variax, in-z 1M, mixer panned to center.

Pt.2 of the shootout showcases a high gain lead tone on an 80s style riff.
Amp: Angel F-Ball with all default settings at noon except hum at 0 and some low cut, changed mic to SM57 on axis to clear up and open the tone a bit.

All delay settings at default, except all mix parameters set at 50% for a more obvious effect.

Showcased models: Ping pong, dynamic delay, stereo delay, digital delay, digital delay w/mod, reverse delay, lo res delay, tube echo, tube echo dry, tape echo, tape echo dry, sweep echo, sweep echo dry, echo platter, echo platter dry, analog delay w/mod, analog echo, auto-volume, multi-head delay.

In the pre-amp position, I was looking for an 80s style “modulated drive” tone (think VH), but most of the results were downright messy and some effects even did weird things to the amp’s gain structure. It would have been probably better with objectively dialed in effects (I just went with the default settings for the sake of brevity), but still some of the analog model simulations were interesting in the pre-amp position.
In the post-amp position, effects gave much better results in terms of cleanliness, but also gave “standardized”, less interesting tones.
