Have you been painting in a realistic way and are thinking about trying a more expressive style? How can you know if it’ll be a good fit for you? The obvious answer is to just try it. But it’s not necessarily a case of having a few goes to help you decide. Because it’s likely to take a little while to get to a stage where you’re producing work to a standard you’re happy with. So before embarking on that journey, this video will help you to consider the reasons FOR, and the reasons AGAINST loosening up your style. Below is a very quick summary:

Reasons FOR Loosening up:

1) You enjoy the look of looser artwork
2) You don't enjoy spending hours making your drawings
3) You want to be able to finish a painting quickly
4) You want to bring more of yourself into your artwork

Reasons NOT to loosen up your art style:

1) Your skills are holding you back from creating realistic work
2) You've been told you SHOULD loosen up but you love to paint detail
3) You don’t want to have to make decisions when you paint

And you don't have to commit to working in just one style forevermore. As a creative human being, you can switch between styles as and when you feel inspired to. The key consideration should be how MAKING the art feels to you. That’s the most important thing. The result is very much secondary.
