David Gareja is a complex of 14 monasteries carved into the rock, located not far from each other in eastern Georgia, in a steppe landscape on the border with modern-day Azerbaijan.
For centuries, the David Gareja monastery complex was one of the most important spiritual and cultural centres in Georgia. Although only part of the monastery complex is still in use today, the site fascinates visitors with its diverse architecture, colourful cave paintings and location in a steppe landscape.
