Superstition Wilderness | Apache Trail & Horse Mesa Dam Power Line

Описание: I explore a rugged section of the Superstition Wilderness on this day hike off the Apache Trail, starting near Black Cross Butte in the Tonto National Forest. After using the Jeep to reach the trailhead off Forest Road 80, I hike down through steep, rocky terrain toward Cactus Lake.

The route drops fast, with loose footing, thick desert vegetation, and constant views opening up as the lake comes into view. At the waterline, I explore Back Beach and Fish Beach, walking the shoreline and taking in the scale of the canyon and the stillness of the lake below Horse Mesa Dam.

This isn’t a marked trail or a popular hike. There’s no signage, no facilities, and very little shade once you’re down near the water. It’s a straightforward day hike focused on access, terrain, and slowing down enough to really see the landscape.

Along the way, I take time to explore the beaches, look at potential low-impact camping spots, and get a closer look at the terrain shaped by the dam and the surrounding volcanic rock.
