Join us on a walking tour through one of Marseille’s most dynamic areas. Today, we bridge the gap between 19th-century grandeur and futuristic academic campuses, exploring where history meets contemporary urban design.
Join me as we explore the vibrant heart of Marseille — Place Castellane. This isn't just a major transit hub; it's a crossroads where Provencal history, stunning architecture, and the modern pulse of a Mediterranean port city meet. From grand marble fountains to historic cinemas, let's discover the authentic flavour of France.
The Route
Place Castellane (Center) ➔ Avenue du Prado (South) ➔ Avenue Jules Cantini (Southeast) ➔ Rue Falque (Southwest) ➔ Rue de Rome (North).
Highlights Along the Way
The Transit Hub: The Castellane metro station (M1 & M2) and the T3 tram line serve as the city's nervous system.
Cinéma Prado: An Art Nouveau architectural gem built in 1906. Originally a bank headquarters, it transitioned into a cinema in 1992, retaining its aristocratic charm.
Les Halles Gourmets: A premium food market on Avenue Cantini, perfect for finding the finest local cheeses, wines, and fresh produce.
Boulangerie Louison: A classic corner bakery on Rue Falque where the scent of fresh croissants fills the air.
The Newsstand: A traditional "Presse" kiosk showcasing the local obsession with "mots fléchés" (crossword puzzles) and the morning paper, La Provence.
The Jules Cantini Fountain
The centerpiece of the square, this masterpiece was carved from white Carrara marble and gifted to the city in 1913. Each sculpture tells a story:
1. Father Rhône (Le Rhône): A powerful male figure holding a sceptre, with a bull at his feet symbolising the raw strength of the region's largest river.
2. The Durance River (La Durance): A seated female figure representing the river that brought life-giving water to Marseille.
3. The Mediterranean Sea (La Méditerranée): A triumphant female figure surrounded by tritons blowing conch shells to announce her presence.
4. The Spirit of Marseille: Perched at the very top, this statue gazes toward the sea, acting as the city's guardian.
5. Musical Putti: Small cherubs playing the lyre and pan flute, symbolising the harmony between nature and the city.
