This video was filmed on a Sunday in winter, so the zoo feels very different to how most people imagine it. The paths are peaceful, there are mostly locals wandering around, and all of the animals are inside keeping warm. Jersey Zoo definitely doesn’t always look like this — in the warmer months it’s much greener, busier, and full of life, especially with visitors from off-island.

For locals, Jersey Zoo is a really popular spot, especially for families on weekends. Many people choose to get a yearly membership, which makes it easy to pop in for relaxed walks, playground visits, or short trips without the pressure of seeing everything in one go.

You’ll also notice construction work happening — this is for the new gorilla enclosure, which will be a much larger, more natural space designed to give the gorillas more room and enrichment. It’s exciting to see the zoo continuing to grow and improve, even during the quieter winter season.

Jersey Zoo has a long and special history with gorillas, including Jambo, one of its most famous residents. Jambo became known around the world after he famously protected a young boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure in 1986, standing guard over him until help arrived.
