Juyongguan (居庸关) is one of the most famous and strategically important passes of the Great Wall of China. Located about 50 km (31 miles) northwest of Beijing, it served as a critical northern defense gateway protecting the capital for centuries.
📍 Location
Situated in the mountains of Changping District, Beijing
Built in a narrow valley, making it a natural defensive stronghold
One of the closest Great Wall sections to central Beijing
🏰 Historical Importance
First constructed during the Northern Qi Dynasty (6th century)
Significantly rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) — most of what you see today is Ming-era construction
Protected Beijing from Mongol invasions
One of the “Three Greatest Passes” of the Great Wall, along with:
Jiayuguan (west)
Shanhaiguan (east)
🧱 Architectural Features
Massive stone walls and fortified gates
Watchtowers placed along steep mountain ridges
A semi-circular layout following the valley terrain
The famous Cloud Platform (Yuntai) — a marble structure carved with Buddhist figures and inscriptions in multiple ancient scripts
