Parhelion
A winter sun dog, also known as a parhelion, is an atmospheric phenomenon that appears as bright spots on either side of the sun, typically at an angle of about 22 degrees. Sun dogs often form in pairs and can be seen when the sun is low on the horizon, especially during cold weather. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals in the atmosphere, creating colorful patches of light that can resemble rainbows. Sun dogs are most commonly observed in winter when the conditions are right for ice crystal formation in the atmosphere.
