The Lake O’Hara Alpine Circuit is an 11-kilometre-long loop hike that circles Lake O’Hara. The route is made up of three trails: Wiwaxy Gap and Huber Ledges, Yukness Ledges, and All Soul’s Route.
On day one of our trip we did the Wixway Gap, Huber Ledges, Lake Oesa and Yunkness Ledges down to the Obipan Plateau. This is raw unedited footage of our time in Yoho National Park.

The lake is surrounded by an amphitheater of mountains on three sides. The three mountains have a trail that is continuous across all of them. From the trailhead, it is recommend to follow the Lake O’Hara Circuit Trail clockwise. Pretty quickly, you will arrive at stunning Lake O’Hara. Yukness Mountain is directly behind the lake and offers a great initial backdrop. The trail then goes left and turns into a pretty steep incline for a while, but the views of Lake O’Hara from above with Mount Schaffer and Mount Biddle behind it make this manageable.

The trail then evens out to a less challenging incline for a few kilometres, but then turns more aggressive nearing the top of this ridge with views of Lake Oesa, Lefroy Lake, Victoria Lake, and Yukness Lake. You will know you are at the summit of this ridge portion of the hike when you hit 2,532 metres. The hike then moves down at a nice slow descent in grade, until you reach the junction for Lake Oesa Trail. From there you will move onto the Yukness Ledges Alpine Trail. The hike gets much easier as it meanders alpine ridges, meadows, and rocky trails through some more lakes.

Access information: The trailhead is only accessible via shuttle service through Parks Canada reservation system. If you do not win a permit for the shuttle you can opt to hike the 11km/7miles into the area.

Hike info: 7 miles and 2896 ft. of elevation gain. This hike takes around 6 hours to complete.
