The Appalachian region has some of the richest temperate forests in the world. Coal mining has been an economic driver since the 1700 and1800’s, but with mining, there have been major impacts on the environment such as habitat loss, water and air pollution, and safety issues.

Since 1970, mined lands in the region have not been restored properly as an unintentional consequence of the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act. After coal is mined, the mining companies have to reconstruct the mountains and reseed the area. In that process they compact the land to prevent landslides, but this hinders the ability of the native plant, tree, and wildlife species to repopulate the area.

Before being mined, Appalachian ecosystems had healthy, productive, and biodiverse forests that supported local organisms and communities. To return this land to a state where life can thrive, invasive species need to be removed and the soil needs to be ripped up to decompact the site. Once that process is complete, adjacent forests can start to seed into the new area, and water and nutrients will be able to infiltrate the soil making survival for new trees possible.

In collaboration with Green Forests Work, One Tree Planted is reforesting about 800 acres of formerly mined lands in Pennsylvania, and we expect this area to sequester about 80,000 metric tons of CO2 after 50 years. This work is collaborative and brings many different organizations and interests together.
